STRATEGIC ALLIANCES IN HEALTH
CARE
A Casebook in Management
Innovation
1996/ISBN 1-895124-22-0
216 pages
Alliances are
becoming the strategic vehicle of choice among healthcare managers who want to cut costs
and maintain value-added services. But the term alliance can mean many things and can
result in problems, if its evolution is not carefully planned.
This new casebook describes 18 alliances in various stages of
development. Learn how to diagnose organizational readiness, assess the risks, choose the
most appropriate corporate partners and plan for the alliance's evolution. Four types of
alliances are discussed in the casebook: programmatic, mergers or consolidations among
similar organizations, public/private sector experiences and alliances in a regionalized
context involving both geographical and multi-service delivery systems.
The casebook is the second in a series arising out of a
collaboration between the Canadian College of Health Service Executives (CCHSE) and the
Hospital Management Research Unit (HMRU) at the University of Toronto.

The Changing Role of Canadian Healthcare CEOs: Results of a National Survey
16 pages
To assess how Canadian healthcare chief executive officers are coping with a decade of regionalization, hospital mergers and other health system changes, a national survey was conducted from January through May, 2000. The survey covered a broad range of topics including the trends that are driving change, career preparation necessary to address the trends, skills required to be an effective leader, and perceived changes to typical CEO responsibilities. The survey results significantly contribute to the national dialogue on sustaining leadership and planning for succession in healthcare organizations.
